BENTLEY WAR MEMORIAL

The Parish Council completed the refurbishment of the war memorial as part of their millennium project and annually, since then, services of remembrance have been held around the memorial. These services are always well supported by the local community. The school, together with the local community, also hold a 'Service of Remembrance'.
Each year since November 2001 a 'Chaplet' shaped wreath was supplied by a local resident for the Parish Council to lay during the ceremony with the words she had requested reading: 'From the Residents of Bentley - In Remembrance'
The Parish Council accepted this heartfelt gift and therefore did not purchase a wreath until the resident was no longer in a position to do so.
The names of the fallen from Bentley: (Listed on the Memorial)
We are the dead.
Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
loved and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders fields.
When you go home, tell them of us and say
For your tomorrow, we gave our today. (Kohima Epitaph)

Those who died in the 1914 - 18 war |
Those who died in the 1939 - 45 war
|
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old;
age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
